Ghetto (stress on "e") is a reservation - a city block allocated for the residence of the oppressed group of the population, and in most cases we are talking about Jews. The Italian word "ghetto" in literal translation into Russian means "foundry workshop". It was close to such a workshop in the XVI century in Venice was the Jewish quarter, received the name from the manufactory. In the Russian language the word "ghetto" is not inclined.
Jewish reservations existed before World War II in all major European cities. Often Jews were allowed to go outside the ghetto only in the daytime, and the density of the population in the ghetto went off over the years and led to unsanitary conditions.
